FiestasBack to Guide

It's said that you can find a fiesta every day on Tenerife. This could well be true. Every village has their own Fiesta which normally celebrates the Saint their church is named after. These are lively events incorporating Religious, cultural, fun and sports events, not forgetting the music and the wine.

Quite often the fiestas close with a firework display, and even in the little villages these can be quite impressive.

There are also the yearly fiestas which are celebrated all over the Island:

Day of The Cross: One day in May all over the Island the locals decorate the cross in their village with flowers.

Corpus Christi: is the Day when the streets are covered with Flower/Sand drawings. The most famous one being in La Orotava, where the Town Hall Square is covered with Sand drawings and the night before the procession the streets are covered with petals by the locals, creating unbelievable pictures. Many of the local towns have their own version of this. Adeje Town in the South of the Island is well worth going to see, if you happen to be on the Island in June.

Romerias: These events take place all over the Island during the spring and summer months. The oxen pull the carts with the barbeques where the food is being cooked, and everyone follows behind in hope of catching a piece of cooked meat or having their glass filled with wine. Great fun, and everyone is made to feel welcome.

The local Tourist Office in the area you are staying will be able to advise you what Fiestas are taking place during your stay.

In February/March of every year the Streets of Santa Cruz come alive for 15 days and nights with people having fun: it's Carnival Time. Full of colour, music and laughter, the Carnival Queen is elected during the first week of the Carnival and the main parade is on 'Shrove Tuesday' (Pancake Day). You need to go and see this at least once, as the costumes and atmosphere are amazing. For those of you who enjoy a funfair, there is a super one for the duration of the Carnival. The Carnival closes with the most spectacular Firework Display.
